I was impressed with the aims and success of CHAMP'S CAMP. It is a striking example of what David Cameron has just discovered and tried to invent 'The Big Society'. I see from the website that Barrie Scougal started CHAMP'S CAMP in Carlisle in January 2008! I am going to remind John Stephenson and others when I get the opportunity.

I was even more impressed to discover that Barrie covers all the areas in Carlisle on different evenings, so giving the kids the opportunity to get there at a reasonable time without the expense and time of travelling across the town. As a boy growing up on a council estate in Carlisle in the fifties and sixties, I knew lots of lads who were pretty much doomed for reasons outside their control or understanding and submitted to a poor life. Those of us who had good families got into school activities, football teams, cubs, scouts and the like and were given a lifeline to achieve the aims of CHAMP'S CAMP. Sadly, such groups rarely included those lads. It would have been great if there had been a Barrie Scougal then!

CHAMP'S CAMP started at Brampton Primary School just after Christmas 2008. It was an activity that I believed, from talking to colleagues, might alleviate the issues at our school with younger children’s behaviour.
The watchwords being discipline, self esteem and fitness seemed to fit in with the attitudes I was trying to instil into the children here.

Barrie Scougal & staff started with a bang and haven’t stopped. We began with the ‘naughty’ boys and then classes were offered to older children and others who weren’t being observed with behavioural problems.
The Thursday group of children made most headway earlier and the amount of behavioural problems appeared to fall away. The discipline instilled into these 10 boys was a sight to behold as they all fixed their eyes on the instructors and for an hour a week, they did as they were told and their behaviour was exemplary. Many of these boys now exhibit less problems away from Boxercise.
There are currently three classes at our school and the skills being taught are great to watch as the children develop. Quieter children are finding a niche and their confidence is rising.
The greatest step forward is the child who was difficult to handle and is now becoming easier.
I commend the instructors and their work to anyone.
